Why choose IPL
The Intense Pulsed Light hair removal process has become very popular due to its cheaper and faster procedure, compared to laser hair removal. The comparison of effectiveness between Intense Pulsed Light and Laser Epilation is debated by scientists, equipment manufacturers and practitioners, but results are generally accepted to be roughly equivalent.
Our IPL Hair Removal Treatments Explained
IPL is also used for the treatment of the skin in a process known as photorejuvenation. The focused, broad-spectrum light is applied to the surface of the skin by way of either a hand-held wand or an articulated arm. This light travels through the skin until it strikes the hair shafts or the bulb (root) of the hair. The bulb is usually where the highest concentration of melanin is located, as opposed to the rest of the hair shaft. As the light is converted to heat energy, the bulb and most of the hair shaft are instantly vaporised. The intense heat radiated by the hair also destroys the hair-producing papilla or the entire hair follicle. It is also claimed that direct light-heat conversion occurs in the darker coloured capillaries that bring nourishing blood to the follicle.
IPL technology is also employed in the treatment of medical disorders of the skin including:
- Sun damage induced dyspigmentation and vascular changes
- Poikiloderma of Civatte
- Acne Rosacea
- Broken capillaries/telangiectases
- Vascular and pigmented birth marks
In terms of rosacea, IPL offers one of the few effective treatments to relieve the facial redness associated with the disorder. This new technology incorporates 'dual mode filtering' and other important advances, which result in safer and more effective treatment than older systems designed for hair removal.
Explaining IPL: How does hair grow?
Hair is made up of a shaft and a root. The shaft is the hair you see and the root is buried beneath the skin. The normal growth cycle of hair includes anagen (active hair growth), telogen (resting phase), and catagen (where the hair falls out). The length of the cycle varies but continues throughout an individual’s lifetime.
Explaining IPL:How does the treatment work?
IPL delivers a short burst of light onto the skin’s surface. The light is converted into heat at the hair follicle. Heating the follicle stops any further regrowth of the hair. Intense pulse light (IPL) is broadband light energy that delivers hundreds of wavelengths (or colours) in a single discharge. The light is passed through filters to produce red light at 650 – 950nm. If the hair is in its growth stage (anagen) the heat can be transmitted down the hair shaft to the base of the follicle destroying the germination centre responsible for its regrowth.
Explaining IPL:How many treatments are needed?
On average 3 to 6 treatments are needed at our IPL Hair Removal Clinic in Romford, Essex. These should take place at 6 to 10 weeks intervals. The exact number of treatments depends on several factors including hair colour, skin colour, hair density and the site of hair growth.
Explaining IPL:Can all hair colours be treated?
IPL works best on dark hair because the pigment melanin absorbs the laser light. Fair hair can respond well, but white hair, grey hair, very blond hair and some types of red hair respond poorly to lasers and IPL, unless stained using a special melanin encapsulating solution.
Explaining IPL Skin RejuvenationIPL is used to remove broken veins from the face, calm the redness of acne rosacea, fade sun spots and pigmentation caused by sun damage and can be used to rejuvenate the skin by activating the fibroblasts to produce more collagen and elastin, leaving the skin firmer and smoother.
